GRANNY
You could see her every Sunday With her hair of silver grey As she slowly made her way to church And there, she'd kneel to pray She looked so very fragile But there was courage in her tread It was plain she was a 'lady' By the carriage of her head The world could never guess her pain And she would never tell But I knew all there was to know I knew this woman well Her faith in God was steadfast Though she'd paid a fearful cost She would go to church each Sunday To pray for those she'd lost She was a fresh young flower from England When she ventured to this land And of all her many suitors An Australian won her hand They built a small log cabin On some land they hoped to farm It was a daunting task that faced them But their resolve was firm and calm They fought a battle grand with nature As side by side they'd toil And each day they claimed a victory As they tamed the virgin soil They cleared the stumps and under-growth Beneath a blazing sun Their strength pushed to its limit Before their battle had been won This gentle little lady Who looked so fragile now Had swung an axe and rode a horse And walked behind a plough Her life was never easy For times were harder then But undaunted and with courage She had done the work of men With her husband close beside her They fought flooding rains and drought And with very meagre income There was much they did without But fate then dealt a cruel blow Her husband's health broke down With heavy hearts they left their farm And moved back into town She was the mother of five children Five children country bred She had been a loving mother Soon, four of them were dead Two daughters died in child birth Young women in their prime Her third became the victim Of a drunken driver's crime She had suffered so much anguish But she would suffer more Her only son was taken By a cruel and senseless war Her husband's heart was broken He shrivelled up inside His will to live had vanished He gave up on life and died Her surviving daughter loved her And stayed close by her side She insisted Granny live with her When she became a bride Granny loved her daughter's children She'd laugh with them and play And then she'd read us stories She was there for us each day She kept a smile upon her face For everyone she met A smile so warm and friendly It's a smile I won't forget If a person in our neighborhood Fell ill and needed care To cater for their every need Our Granny would be there She was there for everybody She was every human's friend But grief was her companion Until the very end The lines of grief were on her brow The pain was in her eyes The pain that has no ending When a cherished, loved one dies Grandma's room was next to mine And I know how her heart bled I would hear her softly crying For her loved ones who were dead But with each waking morning She would hide her grief from sight She'd laugh and play and sing to us She made our mornings bright My Gran taught me so many things But one thing towers above Life cannot defeat you When you fill your heart with love Too seldom in this troubled world Such people pass our way She was a woman of great value I miss her every day And if there is a heaven Then, God will know her worth And I'm sure she'll be rewarded For the good she did on earth K.D.
