HEARTACHES
It seemed their world had ended They both now understood The love that they had fostered Just wasn't any good They both had spoken hasty words That filled their hearts with pain Their words were of such magnitude They'd never love again He felt the pangs of heartbreak As he heard his loved one shout "You're the sort of clumsy idiot That I can do without!" He responded in an instant "Don't think I'm going to fret, You have a nasty temper And we're not married yet!" "Marry you?" She grimaced "That's a thing I'd never do!" "Not for a billion dollars I wouldn't marry you!" She quickly turned her back on him And briskly walked away She knew that every woman Gets the last word anyway He had accidentally spilled some drink Upon her newest dress And in her eyes those tiny spots Looked like a soggy mess She knew it was an accident But he'd made her so darn wild And because of her embarrassment She had acted like a child The afternoon dragged slowly She watched the clock with dread She dearly wished that he'd forget The angry words she'd said And he felt so remorseful He had a worried mind Another girl so pretty Would be very hard to find They had been so good together But with just one angry stroke All the future plans they'd nurtured Had vanished just like smoke When the time for her to leave arrived The strain was on her face She prayed that he'd be waiting At their usual meeting place "Why must love be painful?" She placed her hand upon her heart If only he'd forgive her They could make a fresh new start She felt a rush of panic The fear inside had grown She couldn't bear to face the thought Of walking home alone Then a great joy overcame her And her heart began to race All had been forgiven He had a soft smile on his face Yes, there he was as usual Beside the schoolyard gate For she was only seven And he was only eight.
