IN SEARCH OF KNOWLEDGE
I guess I've tried most everything An eager heart could find To broaden my horizons And educate my mind I've seen a lot and laughed a lot And shed a lot of tears I've watched the seasons come and go Through nigh on eighty years I've thumbed my way through countless books And heard a million yarns I've slumbered in the best hotels And dossed in cocky's barns I've toiled beneath a blazing sun I've stood in dole queue lines I've earned a 'bob' in office jobs And swallowed grit in mines I've hitched a ride on highways And tramped the dusty plains I've breasted flooded rivers And bummed a ride on trains I've feasted on the best of food And slurped the champagne fizz I've starved through a depression I know what hunger is I've listened to respected men Who many thought were wise But most of what they told me Were plain and simple lies "Experience is knowledge" That's a phrase that's old and worn 'Cause I'm still as bloody stupid As the day that I was born The things I thought were solid facts Are fading every day Beliefs I held as sacred Have slowly blown away I've only learned two truths in life Two truths they'll never bend That home is where the heart is And dog is man's best friend.
