The Lonely Pup

The Lonely Pup

THE LONELY PUP

He stood trembling there on the footpath
Looking lost and all alone
He wagged his tail at each passer by
In the hope that he might find a home

The night and the fog seemed to dwarf him
He looked so incredibly small
He softly whimpered his heartache
But nobody noticed at all

He studied each face so intently
Searching for one that was kind
But the strangers all passed by him
And nobody paid him no mind

I offered my hand to cheer him
He was such a pitiful size
I could feel his small body trembling
And it brought the tears to my eyes

A frightened pup in this great big world
And nobody seemed to care
And I knew that I was as cold as the rest
When I left him standing there

I only lived in a very small flat
There was not enough room for a dog
And I must have walked at least two blocks
Before hurrying back in the fog

And the instant the little dog saw me
He opened his eyes so wide
He dashed down the path to greet me
And he stood trembling there at my side

I picked him up and carried him home
And he's brightened my life all these years
When I think of the love that he's shown me
My eyes still get misted with tears

And he now has another owner
For I married a wonderful wife
It's a good thing that I'm not jealous
'Cause she claims he's the love of her life

My wife is a wonderful woman
And I know that we'll never part
And I don't mind a bit coming second
To the dog who is first in her heart

We now live in a much larger home
Where he rules the yard and the house
And don't ever raise your voice to him
Or you'll suffer the wrath of my spouse

I named him Con, 'cause he conned his way
Right into my empty life
He's shared in all of my happiness
And he's shared in my burdens and strife

And when each evening we go for a walk
My wife, and I, and Con
I think of the years of joy we've shared
And marvel how fast they have gone

Together we share many memories
But one memory will never grow old
The night when a little pup found a home
And the night when his owner found gold.
