THE SNOWY RIVER
In the upper Snowy mountains Where the air is fresh and clear The rugged mountain ranges Define nature's own frontier Where translucent, unsoiled waters Are refreshed by melted snow And the river unobstructed Winds to valleys far below Where nature and its beauty Remains unimpaired and pure And the animals and birdlife Feel contented and secure The scenic Snowy River Brings a calmness to the mind And a feeling of seclusion Of a deep refreshing kind Where the voice of nature's creatures emanate from everywhere One is blessed with sweet awareness Of the scents that fill the air From scented shrubs the perfumes rise Enhancing every scene And Gum trees shade the river bank With canopies of green Large, moss-clad rocks stand proudly As the river bathes their feet And the waters lap around them With a sound that's soft and sweet Then further down the river The sunlight makes its stand And reveals in all its majesty A shore of silver sand Sand that glitters in the sunlight Has a splendour of its own With the sparkle of small diamonds Enhancing Nature's regal throne The river brings a feeling Of it's ancient history And as it flows along it's way A sense of mystery I wish to know its secrets Unto it's very end To know each hidden inlet And the scene around each bend The lingering sunset casts its veil Of gold across the sky And a peaceful calm embraces That the spirit can't deny Gum trees spread soft shadows On the ripples in the stream And the woodland light is gentle Where nature rules supreme With the night shades softly creeping The wonder still survives The nocturnal life will frolic 'Til the morning sun arrives And when golden rays of sunlight Announce the break of dawn The mountain mists of gossamer Will herald in the morn And soon the playful zephyrs Of the gentle, early breeze Will dance among the branches To awaken sleeping trees And then the breeze will softly kiss The garlands of wildflowers And again I'll feel the pleasures Of these happy, carefree hours Some minds reach out to others To keep loneliness at bay But every heart seeks solitude In some part of each day And the solitude of mountain streams Is the tonic I love best For the scenes and sounds of nature Always put my heart at rest And a tiny, dancing waterfall That laughs as if in play Makes all the cares of mankind Seem at least a world away K.D.
