Tsunami

Tsunami
TSUNAMI
December 26th 2004

The tsunami burst forth with a thunderous roar
With horror laid bare in its wake
It paid no attention to mournful screams
It claimed every life it could take

Death and destruction, heartbreak and hell
Rode in on the crest of a wave
The old and the young, the strong and the weak
Were clasped in a watery grave

And those who were spared had their hearts torn to shreds
As they staggered in dazed disbelief
The heavens echoed their heartbroken sobs
And the whole world was darkened in grief

Thousands would die on this fateful day
In an angry sea smothered in foam
Mothers and fathers, daughters and sons
Would never again see their home

Was this the will of a powerful God?
For we're told that he's loving and kind
If he can't see the pain and the heartbreak and grief
Then I fear that our God must be blind

We're only mere mortals who search for a truth
But did this wear the mark of God's seal?
If he's numb to the horrors this great wave has wrought
Then I fear that our God cannot feel

The priests may cry from their pulpits high
With a knowing smile on their face
That these were all God's children
And they've gone to a far better place

But many a true believer
Will pause to catch their breath
For it's hard to imagine a loving God
When the world is clouded in death

As we band together to answer the call
And give what assistance we can
Let us bury all racial hatred
And study the heart of the man

You will find that he's made out of flesh and blood
No matter his race or his creed
His heart aches with sadness -- just like ours
As he answers this terrible need

And if understanding and tolerance
And love for our fellow man
Can emerge from the ruins of tragedy
Could this be a cunning God's plan?

Our faith in a God has been questioned
The grief in our hearts will remain
But if mankind can forge lasting friendships
Then perhaps all was not lost in vain.
