Mitzi

MITZI

Our faithful dog had left

His life came to its end
We had lost a family member
He was more to us than 'friend'

And as with other dogs we'd lost
There's a lonely, morbid dove
And it lives within the hollow
Where a dog once stored its love

Our dogs become a part of us
They're family through and through
They share in all our outings
and in everything we do

So when eternal sleep falls on them
It leaves such an empty space
We miss their loyalty, companionship
And their reassuring face

My first dog was a cross breed
We were born on the same day
He was the only playmate that I had
The nearest farm was miles away

The value of his friendship
All words fail to express
I learned at such an early age
The love that dogs possess

I remember when he passed away
My heart shed endless tears
He had devoted his life to me
For those treasured fourteen years

Time casts its deathly shadow
And we find our friends are gone
But death only steals their body
All the memories will live on

As I've stumbled through the chapters
On life's uncertain page
I've had a loving dog beside me
To assist me through each stage

Through some misunderstanding
We may lose a trusted friend
But the love and loyalty of a dog
Stays with you to the end

Whether you're a king or pauper
A dog doesn't give a damn
They accept that you're not perfect
And give you all the love they can

With the loss of our dog's endless love
Our hearts felt so much gloom
The heart that holds our happiness
Now had one empty room

My daughter solved the problem
And without too much delay
She went to the animal shelter
Of the R.S.P.C.A.

They had an English Pointer cross
She'd been starved and so mistreated
She was terrified of humans
Her love and trust had been defeated

Her life had just held terror
She deserved a fresh new start
And before they left that shelter
She had won my daughter's heart

She'd felt the cruelty of humans
And neglect was all she knew
So she treated with suspicion
Everything we tried to do

Her life had known no kindness
All her memories were of pain
A human had forsaken her
She would not trust them again

For months she wouldn't trust us
She would cringe and try to hide
She was so frightened and so tragic
My wife and daughter almost cried

Her past memories were of terror
It had ripped her trust apart
And through gross neglect and cruelty
She was paying with her heart

It took many months of coaxing
We were frightened we would fail
But then at last one morning
Mitzi smiled and wagged her tail

She had realised we loved her
Regaining trust had been so hard
But now she happily played with us
And romped around the yard

She now is full of confidence
All her fear and doubt is gone
All her days are filled with happiness
And they will be from now on

She is a little over twelve months old
And though once she was so frail
If Mitzi keeps on growing
She'll be the size of a Clydesdale

Mitzi has a little playmate
A Jack Russell from next door
And with our love and understanding
She doesn't ask for any more

When she's with us on our outings
Her face reflects her joy and pride
And to know that she's now happy
Brings a warmth we feel inside

I can't describe the feeling
Her smiling face now brings
To know a dog that suffered torture
Now has a heart that sings

She has a playful sense of humour
And she likes to show it, too
So she spreads her toys around the house
As young dogs always do

She now rules her own kingdom
Because my daughter and my spouse
Have ceded her full ownership
Of the backyard and the house

And now each precious morning
Mitzi jumps upon my bed
And while her loving eyes embrace me
I stroke her faithful head

A heart that's full of virtues
Of love and faith and trust
Cruel humans who abuse them
Evoke my hate and my disgust
